Before I came up with this design, I started with one which consisted of cranes made up of smaller cranes made of even smaller cranes etc (except in reverse). This nearly worked, and would also have been very strong (triangles within triangles - possibly even stronger than Buckymesh) and maybe someone smarter than I can make it fit together properly.
